Who are we
Jesuit Refugee Service is an international Catholic organisation with a mission to accompany, serve and advocate for the rights of refugees and other forcibly displaced persons. JRS provides casework support, financial assistance, temporary accommodation, legal support, foodbank, English language classes, and other social support activities.
Volunteering with JRS
JRS has been supporting refugees and people seeking asylum globally since 1980. JRS Australia would not be able to do the work that we do without a large and committed pool of volunteers who help to ensure the smooth functioning of our not-for-profit organisation.
Volunteers offer invaluable assistance in a variety of practical ways: providing accompaniment support through home visits, hospitality and reception at our 2 drop-in spaces in Parramatta, cooking meals for fortnightly house meetings at our men’s shelter in Kings Cross, teaching Englishes classes or providing 1:1 tutoring, assisting with the playgroup and English program for mums and bubs, organising men’s nights and excursions, shopping for and distributing foodbank, and helping with resume writing and job searching.
We are open Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm. We only occasionally hold events during the evenings and on weekends that require volunteer support.
JRS Westmead is a 15 min (1.2km) walk from Westmead train station, linked by the Western line (T1), Cumberland line (T5) and the Blue Mountains line. There are also buses from Westmead station and some parking is available.
Arrupe Place is a 15 min (1.2km) walk from Parramatta train station, a major train hub linked by the Western line (T1), Inner West line (T2), Cumberland line (T5) and the Blue Mountains line. There are also many buses from Parramatta station Stands A1 and A2 that run up Smith St and Wilde Ave to Victoria Rd.
